Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Football Club hosted a charity Memorial Match last Friday 6thAugust 2025. It brought together two families who have lost stalwarts of the Cricket and Rugby Club over the last 18 months under the guise of “The Hundred” with two teams from the Cricket and Rugby sections battle out a hard-fought contest on Friday 8 Aug at the Club.

The “Lang XI” batted first against the “Curtis XI” with the first ball being bowled by Ollie Curtis’ son Jack, who immediately took a wicket with the first ball of the match. A fitting tribute to his late father Ollie who represented a much loved player for both the Rugby and Cricket Sections. There was also a cameo appearance from Ollie’s father David Curtis.
A competitive total was achieved by batters, who were led by Graeme Lang’s son Caelan, with his former wife Emma showing some nerves of steel whilst batting. There was also a cameo appearance from Graeme’s other son Keir. Again, a fitting tribute to our former 1st XV Rugby and 1st XI Cricket Captain.

With the final over in sight it was not a fore gone conclusion, however half way into the final over it was obvious without a major mishap that the “Lang XI” would win.

However, the result is immaterial in some way, given the celebration to their lives and the support to the event given by members and friends in raising funds for the two charities designated by the families, with the sum of £885 being split between the Beatson and the British Heart Foundation.
