Cricket End of Season Round Up 🏏🏏

With the 2025 season in the books, both the juniors and senior have held the end of season awards over the past couple of weeks:

Helensburgh Junior Cricket has had its most successful summer for a number of years. Managing to complete 9 matches, having 4 players make their debut for the Junior side, and 11 players turning out for Senior sides (with 7 doing so for the first time), marks a significant increase from previous years. Alongside this, there has been an increase in overall Junior membership, with a total of 23 Juniors participating in training.

In the U14 league, the side achieved 8 matches, winning 2 along the way. Whilst 2 wins may not seem significant, considering the significantly smaller catchment and squad size/age by comparison to other Clubs, it is a great feat.

The season concluded with the Annual Season review and awards, where all of the juniors new and old being celebrated. Three awards were given out for the U14 squad:

• CricIndex Coaches award – Alastair Scott; Alastair was awarded this for his continued energy and support for the team as he is a constant voice of positivity both on and off the field, with other players noticing when he is not around.

• Toyota Most Improved Player – Dougal Scott; with considerable hard work over the winter paying off, Dougal improved across his all round game, but particularly in his bowling as he took on the role as one of the opening bowlers, taking more wickets and catches and making more runs than he has across previous seasons.

• CricIndex Players Player Award – Seth Robinson; voted for by his teammates, Seth was described as ‘the kindest, hardworking and supportive person, who is also a really good cricketer’, and was the clear winner in the voting.

Training for the 2026 season will start after the October half term, for enquiries check the HCRFC website.

The Helensburgh Cricket Club End-of-Season awards night took place on Friday 5th September. All in attendance enjoyed a three-course meal, wine and entertainment provided by guest speaker, ex-Scotland international, Paul Hoffmann.

Awards were presented to some individuals who made significant contributions throughout the season: -

The Second XI player of the year was awarded to Adie Gillet who put together some impressive batting innings, scoring 113 runs and averaging 37.67. Adie’s experience proved valuable for younger players he played alongside for the 2s.

The Second XI players’ player of the year was awarded to team captain, Callum Anderson. Calum’s made batting, bowling and fielding contributions, with his 8 wickets making him the 2s leading wicket-taker. On the field he acted as a role model for all and his leadership is greatly appreciated.

The First XI player of the year award went to Cameron White, scoring 239 runs for the 1s.

The First XI player’s player of the year award was present to Lance Trueman. Lance had an outstanding season for the 1s, scoring 461 runs and taking 25 wickets. These figures made him the 2nd top run-scorer AND 2nd top wicket-taker in the entire league – a particularly impressive achievement. Lance’s batting and bowling contributions were supported by his excellent on-field attitude, always remaining positive and supporting his teammates.

The Young player of the year was awarded to Ben Atkinson. Ben has broken into the Helensburgh 1st team at just 16 year of age. He has already showcased impressive batting and bowling ability and looks thoroughly at home in the 1st XI. Everyone is very excited to see how Ben’s game develops in the seasons to come.

The Chairman’s award was presented by chairman Aidan Keogh, to Caelan Lang. In recent years Caelan has become the face of the cricket club and has almost been ever-present on the field for the 1st XI, making huge contributions batting, bowling and fielding. Further still, Caelan has had a huge influence off-field - organising social events, working on the grounds and plenty of other voluntary work behind the scenes. We all real appreciate his consistent and tremendous efforts.

The club would also like to extend a huge thank you to all Players, Sponsors and Supporters who have made it possible for the club field two team all season, something that seemed very unlikely not too long ago. Further thanks go to Stuart Barrie for his fantastic work running and developing the youth system, Martin Claydon for scoring for the 1st XI all season and Andy Saunders for providing teas throughout the season and the delicious awards night meal. Attention now turns towards winter nets and next season where we will aim to build upon the progress made in 2025.
